In the present day, Ji-hye finds a box of her mother Joo-hee's old letters and diary, and through them discovers her mother's first love with Joon-ha during a summer in the countryside in 1968. Her mother's story unfolds alongside Ji-hye's own feelings for Sang-min, a fellow student involved in the school theater.

In the opening chapter, struggling short-film director Nam Jin-gu is nagged by his wife about his drinking and clashes with his former teacher.
